Position paper: What’s in a name? Use of the term ‘not-for-profit’

Monday, 20 February 2017

The AICD has prepared a position paper setting out its view on the use of the term ‘not-for-profit’. This paper explores the background of the term and why it has become the subject of debate. It also considers how it is used by government, potential alternatives and evaluates the merits of change.

The AICD does not believe the term ‘not-for-profit’ should be changed.

The term is imperfect, however there is no perfect alternative and the potential benefits of a change in terminology would not necessarily outweigh the costs. As such, AICD believes that it would be more impactful to direct the energy spent on this debate towards building a more complete understanding of the role of NFPs in the Australian community.
