    Current

For many directors, the biggest challenge isn’t accessing learning — it’s finding the time to properly engage with it. The CDC Residential is designed to remove those barriers, creating a focused, interruption-free environment.

For Scott, that shift was immediate. “I've really enjoyed the privilege of being able to take a week out of regular life to sit in that space and grapple with those issues.”

The Byron Bay setting amplified the sense of separation from daily pressures. A place he has long felt connected to through surfing, it helped him enter a more reflective mindset. “Life slows down a little bit, which is perfect speed to be in a learning mindset. I'm really engaged in the content.”

Surfing played a central role in that reflection. For Scott, the ocean is both a passion and a tool for clarity, helping him process complex governance challenges beyond the classroom.

    Momentum from immersive learning

The CDC Residential delivers the course in five intensive days, allowing participants to build momentum and stay fully engaged without competing priorities.

Scott found the immersive format particularly suited to governance learning, where answers are rarely straightforward. “I was really attracted to this style of intensive learning, because I think the answers to so many of the issues we're discussing this week are not black and white,” he says.

Each day followed a rhythm — early surf sessions for reflection, followed by structured, discussion-led learning — creating a strong sense of continuity and focus.

Deep peer connection: Building lasting networks

A key strength of the residential experience is the depth of peer connection it enables.

“Over the course of the week, I feel like we've really built rapport and bond as a group, and really got to know each of the fellow participants and their stories.”

For him, the diversity of perspectives was just as valuable as the relationships themselves. “The opportunity to… grapple with these issues with like-minded people with incredible different perspectives was really appealing to me.”

These connections don’t end with the course. They form the foundation of ongoing peer networks that support directors well beyond the classroom.

A premium investment in governance capability

Taking a week away from work is a significant commitment — but for Scott, it’s one that pays dividends. The CDC Residential reframes that time as a deliberate investment in governance capability and long-term impact.

“Being able to take time off and a week away to engage in this… is a real privilege… and it's an opportunity that I'm really grateful for.”

More than just completing a course, the experience allows participants to engage deeply with ideas, build confidence and return with a clearer approach to complex board challenges:

“It's an absolute privilege to be able to sit in a structured learning space and to be able to do that without the worries of everyday life has been incredible.”

Where purpose, place and learning meet

For Scott, the CDC Residential was more than professional development — it was an experience that brought together purpose, place and perspective.

Between early morning surf sessions and immersive classroom discussions, he found the clarity to think differently about governance — and the connections to strengthen how he approaches it.

In stepping away from the everyday, he was able to return with something more valuable: renewed focus, deeper insight, and the confidence to make a greater impact where it matters most.
