John Reid has played a vital role over many years in ensuring AICD's flagship program the Company Directors Course and other director training programs are kept relevant, practical and up to date for directors by directors. Reid willingly shares his vast and impressive experience with directors and aspirants in a number of ways. Members who have attended CDC residential programs will be familiar with his fireside briefings which are an informal discussion on issues affecting directors and the board.

Another role Reid enjoys on the program is related to the syndicate activity. Groups of participants prepare and present one aspect of a case study to Reid, who then challenges their findings and suggests alternative ways of handling particular situations from a director's perspective.

Hard on the heels of HIH and One.Tel his recently-released Commonsense Corporate Governance - Personal Views is a singularly practical book, demsystifying the inner workings of Australia's boardrooms.

Reid's personal assessment of what being a good chairman or director entails is not only timely given the current debate on corporate governance, but might well prove a useful template for a more accountable and courageous style of corporate leadership.

He was chairman of James Hardie Industries for more than 20 years, as well as being a member of the board of many of Australia's flagship companies, Qantas Airways Ltd and BHP included John Reid is currently chairman emeritus of the Australian Graduate School of Management; chairman of TechStar, Business Management, Bestcare Foods a director of Focus Publishing and a global counselor of The Conference Board in New York. As well as his extensive board room experience, he is also a philanthropist and part-time viticulturalist.

AICD is very grateful for the untiring support and enthusiasm Reid has provided over his many years as a member and mentor to staff and looks forward to his support in future activities.
