First Nations Sector Report

First Nations Sector Snapshot 2026

A national profile of First Nations directorship

The First Nations Sector Snapshot 2026 provides a national picture of First Nations directorship across Australia.

Drawing on Australian Institute of Company Directors membership data, analysis of directors across different governance contexts, a survey of members and interviews with First Nations directors, the report establishes an important baseline for understanding First Nations participation in governance.

The findings show that First Nations directors bring significant governance, professional and community experience. However, access to commercial and listed company board opportunities remains limited.

The report explores:

  • where First Nations directors currently serve

  • the skills and experience they bring to boards

  • what motivates their contribution

  • the role of networks in board appointments

  • barriers to greater participation

  • opportunities to strengthen pathways into commercial governance.

Download the report to explore the key findings and consider the role your board can play in strengthening First Nations participation in governance.
