Test your judgement before the decision counts
For practicing directors, professional development is less about adding governance theory and more about refining decision making and judgement – especially on complex, emerging and contemporary issues such as AI governance, organisational culture, and stakeholder expectations.
Starting as a pilot in Melbourne, the Company Directors Practical is purely experiential.
Over two facilitated days, you’ll work through a complex boardroom scenario with your peers – testing, refining and strengthening your governance judgement as the scenario evolves.
This course is designed for practising directors with a current board role and experience in the boardroom. It’s ideal if you want to strengthen your ability to navigate emerging challenges, ambiguity and complexity in the boardroom.
You may benefit from this course if you:
have completed the Company Directors Course™ or have at least two years’ experience as a board director; and
currently serve on a board and want to further develop your boardroom judgement; and
want to test your thinking alongside other experienced directors in a safe, credible setting.
This course is not designed for learners without practical boardroom experience.
The Company Director Practical - Pilot focuses on strengthening how directors reason, challenge and make decisions in contemporary governance environments.
You will learn to:
Interpret contemporary governance issues through the lens of board judgement, accountability and evidence.
Challenge complex decisions where information is incomplete, contested or evolving.
Identify what information boards need, and in what form, to effectively oversee emerging issues.
Explore how technology, culture, stakeholder expectations, and ethical decision-making intersect in the boardroom.
Translate learning into practical questions, insights and approaches that can be applied in your own boardrooms.
Key themes explored
The pilot explores contemporary governance challenges through four integrated judgement challenges:
- Decision-making with purpose and agility
- AI and data governance
- Stakeholder and community expectations
- Culture in a complex world
Rather than examining these issues in isolation, participants explore how they interact and influence board decisions in practice.
The Company Director Practical - Pilot is unlike a traditional course.
Each time the course is run, it examines complex governance issues through one boardroom scenario – so you can attend the course every few years and have a different experience every time.
Over two face-to-face days, you’ll practice reasoning and decision-making with your peers when information is incomplete, priorities compete, and there is no obvious answer.
Throughout the experience, facilitators will reveal new information, which will allow you to practice reassessing assumptions, responding to changing circumstances and defending your reasoning.
During the course, expect:
High-quality discussion with experienced peers
An immersive boardroom simulation environment
Small group and board committee activities
Structured peer challenge and debate
Practical boardroom tools and takeaways
Experienced facilitators acting as moderators and provocateurs rather than lecturers
Peer connection
At the end of Day 1, you are invited to join your peers for networking drinks.
