Kulja Coulston leads the AICD's governance practice priorities, coordinating across the organisation to develop guidance, resources and thought leadership that support better governance across a broad range of issues. She is also co-host of the AICD's Director Download podcast.
Kulja (pronounced 'karl-ya') joined AICD in September 2023 to lead the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) Australia Chapter, which AICD has hosted since 2021. She provides advice and support to CGI Australia and prepares the monthly Climate in Focus newsletter, reaching more than 23,000 subscribers.
Kulja has worked as an independent journalist and communications director for more than 25 years. She is a director of the startup Climate Communications Australia and a committee member of the Wetland Revival Public Fund, which supports ecosystem revitalisation in the southern Murray-Darling Basin.
Before joining AICD, Kulja served as Communications and Knowledge Lead at Climateworks Centre, Monash University. She has also held specialist roles at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Mitchell Institute for Health and Education Policy, and Renew, and spent 15 years as a current affairs broadcaster at Triple R FM.
Kulja is a graduate of the University of Oxford Saïd Business School's Strategic Leadership Programme and has completed the Governance Institute of Australia's Company Secretary training. She also holds qualifications in public policy, journalism and information management from the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy and RMIT University.
