Joseph Haweil GAICD | Former Councillor and Mayor, Hume City, VIC and Deputy President (Metropolitan) of the Municipal Association of Victoria

Joseph Haweil is an experienced public sector leader. He was first elected to Hume City Council, one of Victoria’s largest municipal authorities at 27 years of age in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, serving two terms on Council and two terms as Mayor. He is a former Director and Deputy Chair of VITS LanguageLoop, the Victorian Government’s important interpreting and translating business where he served between 2021-2026.

During his time in local government, Joseph was a prominent voice and advocate with particular focus on issues including growth area planning and infrastructure, social and public housing, gambling sector reform and support for new and emerging communities. He played a critical role in local government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Joseph has served on a wide range of Boards, taskforces and advisory committees including as a Director and Deputy President of the Municipal Association of Director, a Director of the Australian Local Government Association, Chair of the Interface Councils Group and Northern Councils Alliance and Director of the National Growth Areas Alliance.
