Carmel Mulhern was appointed as an independent non-executive director of the PwC Australia Governance Board in 2024 and chairs its Risk Committee.
She also chairs the Telstra Foundation, is a trustee director for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and sits on the Advisory Board for the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics.
Carmel has over 25 years’ experience as a senior executive of ASX10 companies in the financial services, superannuation, telecommunications, technology, media and manufacturing sectors. Her previous roles include Group General Counsel and Group Executive Governance at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, where she championed rebuilding stakeholder trust, fair and efficient resolution of legal matters and effective corporate governance in strategy execution, and Group General Counsel and Group Executive Corporate Affairs at Telstra, leading legal, communications, regulatory, government relations and sustainability initiatives through a time of strategic transformation and digital disruption.
Carmel is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia, a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a participant in the 2025 AICD Chair’s Mentoring Program. She has been recognised globally for her contributions to diversity and innovation in the legal sector. She holds a Master of Laws with a focus on directors’ duties and corporate governance, and is widely recognised for her leadership and commitment to ethical business practices.
