Sharon Dawson

Deputy Chair, Racing Queensland

Sharon has held positions as Chair of the Advisory Council of Cairns TAFE, Deputy Chair of Far North Queensland Ports Corporation, a couple of stints as a Director of Advance Cairns and current Deputy Chair of Racing Queensland.

Like most people, Sharon hates writing these professional bios, so here’s three things that will tell you something about her.

  1. A skill that she has learned late in life and which she is ridiculously proud of is reversing a boat trailer.
  2. Sharon has four kidults who tell her that she is a slightly above average mother
  3. One of her favourite books is ‘Suppose I die – the Evelyn Maunsell Story’ by Hector Holthouse

Sharon is Cairns born and bred and after living and working in UK and Sydney, in tourism and recruitment, she returned to Cairns in late 1999 to work in the family business, Dawsons Engineering. Despite her father’s best attempts to get her to undertake a Diesel Fitting apprenticeship, she instead focussed on the labour hire and maintenance services side of the business.

One of her early frustrations with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and it’s then focus on white collar industries, led her to get involved with the Chamber to elevate the profile of Cairns within the mining sector. Strengthening and diversifying the regional economy has been a shared theme in her working life since.
