The Hon Peter Gutwein was the 46th Premier of Tasmania and one of
the State’s longest serving Treasurers.
He had a 20 year parliamentary career holding a range of ministerial appointments before rejoining the private sector in mid-2022.
When he became Premier, he acted ahead of the rest of the country to protect Tasmanians from COVID, with the state declared one of the safest places in the world while maintaining a strong economy.
Whilst Premier he oversaw the state generating 100% of its energy from renewable sources and achieving net-zero emissions, which no other Australian jurisdiction and very few other industrialised places in the world can claim.
His government began the Commission of Inquiry into Children in state settings, undertook significant steps towards reconciliation with our first nations people and built the case for Tasmania to have its own AFL team.
Since leaving politics Peter has forged a career as a strategic adviser to companies on the leading edge of emission reduction technologies as well as being a company director and chair.
He works with Sea Forest, which leads the world in the reduction of methane from livestock and with INCAT which is building the world’s largest battery electric ship.
Peter Chairs MRC Tas, which oversees the federal Government’s humanitarian refugee settlement service in Tasmania and is also engaged in several renewable energy projects.
In his spare time, he enjoys football and is the President of the NTFA, an association of 22 clubs with 3500 participants and 10,000 members.
He is the fittest he has ever been in his life and recently undertook a 350 kilometre walk across Tasmania to generate a positive conversation around the contribution of migrants and refugees.
He trains daily and enjoys spending time with his family, and his two dogs and two cats in Launceston where he lives now.
